Personality:

Maya is, above all things, a very energetic, very cheerful person. She's got so much energy that she doesn't even really know what to do with it all. She's always ready to go out and do things, no matter how ridiculous (or potentially dangerous). She puts everything she's got behind her antics, and does so with a smile on her face. In canon, Maya is always dragging Phoenix around to various places and activities, like the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix, an event that phoenix is very obviously not interested in. But that's what's great about Maya. She has the boundless energy, and the positive outlook of a child. She carries a lot of baggage--most of it family related--but it's never something she lets get her down. She trucks along and notices the little things, and she enjoys herself completely while doing so.

That being said, she very frequently acts without thinking. In the Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney game, Maya hits Phoenix over the head with a pipe in order to see if she could hit the back of his head from a specific vantage point. She doesn't just lightly tap him, either. She actually puts all her weight into the swing, which could have had very bad consequences for her and poor Phoenix. It's not that she had meant him any ill will, she's just the kind of person that does stuff like that. When she gets an idea in her head, she acts on it without fully thinking it through, which is part of the reason she gets herself into so much trouble. She does what she wants, not just in her actions but in the way she speaks, too.

Maya is definitely not afraid to speak her mind, no matter how rude it might make her look. She calls Phoenix an old prune at some point, and calls Wendy Oldbag 'windbag". Like above, she doesn't really mean harm by it. She just kind of says what she thinks, and doesn't have much of a brain to mouth filter where every day interactions come into play. It's not exactly a good thing, but it's not bad either, because it means she's also not afraid to offer advice whenever Phoenix needs it. And really, her advice usually comes in handy. She might act childish and impulsive (because she is) but she's by no means stupid. She can think things through when she tries, and in court, she notices contradictions within testimonies. Sometimes even before Phoenix does.

Maya is endlessly curious. She likes to figure things out and learn about the places and people around her. Sometimes this means rifling around in other peoples things, and touching things she isn't supposed to, but it's all done with good intentions. She's just very curious. If she sees something sticking out of a drawer, she's going to want to know what it is. Even if it's in a place she shouldn't be digging around. Usually, this trait helps her obtain evidence that Phoenix himself wouldn't have found, but it could also land her in some serious trouble.

One of her biggest traits is the fact that Maya is extremely loyal, and will do anything to help the people she cares about and believes in. A wonderful example of this is in the Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney game. When Estella is about to be dropped to her death, Maya doesn't just stand around and let it happen. She jumps up onto the cage--above a pit of fire--to free Estella, because Maya knows she was being wrongly accused. There is probably nothing she wouldn't do for her friends, honestly. She would stand by them till the end, and puts them before herself. At the end of Trials and Tribulations, Pearl is feeling down because she had been manipulated into helping commit a crime, and Maya is sure to put on a cheerful face for her cousin. Maya herself had been through a lot, and she was by no means as cheerful as she had been acting. But Pearl needed her to be strong, and so that's what she did.

Lastly, Maya is very determined to better herself and improve her abilities. She takes life by the horns, and is constantly working to improve herself. One way she does this is by going on retreats to hone her spiritual powers. She wants to be the best she can be, and will take any opportunity she can to get there.

OU/AU: AU!

History:

Maya grew up on a small island off the coast of the Earth Kingdom, in the village of Kurain. The village is populated by members of the Fey clan, a family that goes back many, many generations. They're a family of fortune tellers and are, supposedly, able to speak to the dead. They boast having ancient connections to the air nomads, which supposedly gives them insight into the workings of the spirit world. This statement is definitely an over-exaggeration, at least in the Kurain village of the present, because while the Fey clan is still widely known for their fortune telling, none of them can actually speak to the dead.

Maya is a member of the main branch, and until she immigrated to Republic City, she had been the last member of the main branch still living in Kurain. Her father died before she was born, and her mother, shamed for botching an important fortune-telling, left Kurain when Maya was just a child. Her older sister took care of her for a time, but she left without a word early in Maya's teens, leaving her in the care of their jealous aunt.

Maya's aunt wanted nothing more than to have one of her children become head of the clan, and so she devised a plot to have Maya deemed incapable. She framed Maya for a murder she didn't commit, and Maya was nearly put away for the crime. Luckily, one of her cousins helped her escape the island, and sent her off to meet up with someone who could get her to safety.

She ended up in Republic City, in the hopes of getting a new start, and became an apprentice at a bakery. She had been living peacefully for a few months before she woke up one day and found herself capable of airbending. It caused her a good deal of trouble, but she's looking into starting training on Air Temple Island.

Suggested Nationality: Earth Kingdom
Why?: Given the cultural diversity found within the Earth Kingdom, it would make sense for Kurain to exist within that nation.
Bending: Airbending
Subset: Spiritual Projection. (It won't manifest for a long time, though. Not until she becomes a better bender.)
